Chaweng, on the east coast, is the island's busiest beach, with shops, restaurants and nightlife close by; Anantara Lawana sits at its northern end and Vana Belle is on quieter Chaweng Noi. Bophut and Mae Nam on the north coast are calmer and sit closer to the airport; we would look here for Six Senses, Four Seasons and W. Lamai on the south-east coast is where Banyan Tree and Renaissance are, and Kamalaya is further round the southern coast. The south-west around Taling Ngam is the most secluded, home to Conrad, and a longer drive from the airport and the main towns. The Ritz-Carlton sits on the quiet north-east tip near Choeng Mon.

Lamai, Laem Nan · near Lamai Bay
A hillside resort on the Laem Nan peninsula at the edge of Lamai Bay, with villas and deluxe rooms and a walk of about 15 minutes to Lamai Beach. It was rebranded from Buriraya Resort & Spa in 2005 as Marriott's first Renaissance in Thailand. A relaxed choice for a beach holiday with a spa.

Laem Set, south coast · opened 2005
A wellness retreat on the southern coast near Laem Set, built around a cave once used by monks. It offers programmes such as detox, sleep enhancement, and stress and burnout, with a 25 m lap pool, a yoga pavilion and a fitness centre. Good for guests who want a structured spa and wellness stay.

North Chaweng · 140 rooms

Opened in October 2017 on the north-east tip of the island near Choeng Mon and Plai Laem, with suites and pool villas across a large hillside site. Dining includes Pak Tai, a southern Thai restaurant. Quiet and secluded, a fit for couples and longer stays.

Chaweng Noi · near Chaweng Noi Beach
A resort at the southern end of Chaweng Noi bay, about 15 to 20 minutes by car from the airport, with pool suites and villas. Panali serves southern Thai food on the beachfront and Kiree serves international dishes. There is also Vana Spa. Good for couples and for guests who want Chaweng nearby without staying on the main strip.

Taling Ngam, south-west coast · near Aow Thai Beach

Laem Yai, north-west coast · near Mae Nam
A villa resort on a private bay at Laem Yai on the north-west tip of the island, with Mae Nam Beach a short walk away. Villas have their own infinity pools and Gulf of Thailand views. Restaurants include KOH Thai Kitchen & Bar and the seafood restaurant Pla Pla. Good for families and couples who want space.

Bophut, north coast · near Samui airport (about 10 minutes by car)
A villa resort on a headland at the northern tip of the island in Bophut, about ten minutes by car from the airport. Many villas have private pools, the restaurants include Dining on the Rocks and Dining on the Hill, and there is a Six Senses Spa with outdoor and indoor treatment villas. A convenient pick for shorter stays.

Chaweng has the most restaurants, shops and nightlife, and is a short drive from the airport. On our list, Anantara Lawana is at the northern end of Chaweng Beach, Hyatt Regency is in North Chaweng and Vana Belle is on quieter Chaweng Noi.
