CITY GUIDE · VENICE
Where to stay in Venice, from palazzos near St. Mark's Square to quiet island retreats and a beach resort on the mainland coast.
Most of the hotels here sit in the San Marco sestiere, within a short walk of Piazza San Marco, La Fenice and the Doge's Palace, which suits first-time visitors who want to cover the sights on foot. Castello, along the Riva degli Schiavoni, trades a few minutes of walking for lagoon views and a calmer promenade. San Polo and Santa Croce put you closer to Rialto and away from the busiest squares, while Cannaregio is the quieter, more residential side of the city. Giudecca, Murano and the lagoon islands mean a boat ride into town, but you get gardens, pools and space that the old center rarely offers. Further out, Lido di Jesolo is a mainland beach resort area, so it works as a seaside stay rather than a base for sightseeing on foot.
